Chlamydia is one of the most common bacterial sexually transmitted infection (STI) in the UK. It is passed on by having unprotected sex (sex without a condom).
It is especially common in young adults, with around 60% of reported cases found in those under 25. That’s why the NHS recommends you get tested for STIs at least once a year and every time you change partners.
If Chlamydia is left untreated, it can lead to long-term health problems, especially in women. In women untreated chlamydia can cause pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy, and infertility. It can also be passed by a pregnant woman to her baby.
In men, chlamydia in rare cases, can spread to the testicles, causing them to become painful and swollen.
How is Chlamydia spread?
Chlamydia is an STI caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis, and is typically spread through unprotected sexual intercourse, including vaginal, anal, or oral sex with an infected partner. Sharing sex toys that haven’t been washed or covered with a new condom each time they’re used can also transmit chlamydia and other STIs. Practicing safe sex and employing preventative measures are crucial in avoiding the transmission of such infections.
What are the symptoms of Chlamydia?
Most people who get Chlamydia may not know they have it because it often presents without any symptoms.
However, some symptoms you may develop include:
- pain when you pee
- unusual discharge from the vagina, penis, or anus
- painful and swollen testicles
Women may also experience:
- tummy pain
- bleeding after sex
- bleeding between periods
Gonorrhoea is also a sexually transmitted infection that is caused by the bacteria ‘Neisseria gonorrhoeae’ or ‘gonococcus’.
How is Gonorrhoea spread?
The bacteria responsible for the infection are present in discharge from the penis and in vaginal fluid. It is easily spread through unprotected vaginal, oral, or anal sex with an infected partner. Sharing sex toys that haven’t been washed or covered with a new condom each time they’re used can also transmit gonorrhoea and other STIs. Practicing safe sex and employing preventative measures are crucial in avoiding the transmission of such infections.
If left untreated, Gonorrhoea can cause infertility in both men and women and other sexual and reproductive health problems. It can also increase the risk of getting and spreading HIV. It can also be passed by a pregnant woman to her baby.
What are the symptoms of Gonorrhoea?
Some people won’t experience any symptoms if they have Gonorrhoea. Symptoms usually appear 1-14 days after sexual contact with an infected partner.
Gonorrhoea symptoms in men may include:
- white, yellow, or green discharge from penis tip
- pain or burning sensation when peeing
- painful, or swollen testicles
Gonorrhoea symptoms in women may include:
- green, or yellow vaginal discharge
- pain or burning sensation when peeing
- bleeding between periods or during sexual intercourse

LoviTest offers testing specifically to detect genital Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea. The testing facility does not provide a medical service.
If Chlamydia or Gonorrhoea is detected, or if you are experiencing symptoms of an STI, it's highly recommended to seek appropriate medical advice and treatment from a healthcare professional. Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea can usually be treated easily with antibiotics.
In the event of a positive diagnosis for Chlamydia or Gonorrhoea, it's crucial to inform your sexual partners. This step is vital as you might have contracted the infection from a partner unaware of their own status. Informing your partners allows them to promptly seek testing and treatment.
This not only ensures timely medical attention for them but also reduces the risk of serious health complications caused by these infections, if left untreated. Additionally, it prevents further transmission to you or other partners during future sexual encounters.
