Drug Interactions with LoviOne 1.5 mg tablet (levonorgestrel)
All concomitant medications, whether prescribed, OTC or herbal should be checked for potential interactions prior to supply of LoviOne.
Some medicines may prevent LoviOne from working as effectively. If a patient has used any of the medicines below during the last 4 weeks, LoviOne is not suitable for them. You should consider alternative emergency contraceptive methods or refer them to their GP who may recommend a copper intrauterine device (IUD). If an alternative option is unavailable or they are unable to see their GP promptly then they can take a double dose of LoviOne to improve efficacy in these circumstances.
Medicine interactions with LoviOne include:
- Barbiturates and other medicines used to treat epilepsy e.g primidone, phenytoin and carbamazepine.
- Treatments of tuberculosis e.g rifampicin, rifabutin.
- HIV infection treatments e.g ritonavir, efavirenz.
- Fungal infection treatment (griseofulvin)
- Herbal remedies containing St John’s Wort (hypericum perforatum).
LoviOne may also effect how well other medicines work including a medicine called cyclosporin which suppresses the immune system.
